I'm thinking about buying a Gravely. I mainly want something to mow brush/heavy grass where the tractor and brush hog can't get. I'd also like to till the garden. What model do I want? What are the strong and weak points? What should I look for on a used machine?

Thanks
T.

The older Gravelys were built like tanks. The newer Airens/Gravelys look good, but I have no personal experience with them.

I have a Gravely 816 and love it. If I were you i would get a 816 Gravely because they are so tough and have a 16.5 horse onan which is a powerhouse.

Tim, We are market gardeners who use two Gravely model L tractors in our operation. One is a 1949, the other a 1959. I'd suggest an 8-speed version with either the Gravely 7.6 hp engine or the Kohler 10 or 12 hp. Parts are available for all. Strong points? They are built like tanks and will outwork and outlast almost all of the newer, more expensive tractors. Weak points? They are heavy and awkward until you learn not to fight them. Have a look at the link below for more info. Good Luck!
