Sounds like you have an early 60's Simplicity. Simplicity built tractors for Allis Chalmers, Montgomery Wards, and Homelite in various years. Try the simpletractors website for more information.

"Garden Mark" was Montgomery Wards l&g equiptment trademark.Could be Gilson(GIL),Simplicity(SIM),preMTD Yardman(ZHJ,ZYJ etc)or Wards(TMO)also Murray or MTD built. Some older units had number prefixed by above code stamped on frame,Unfortunately many also had the accursed"fall off in a couple years" sticker. Each mfg has some "trademark" assemblys that CAN help determine mfg,ie:steering setup, drive setup, attachment mounts, control point layouts, sheet metal designs etc,but theres no"book",you just get to the point of recognizing them after awhile.Posting a pic might help or check the garden tractor photo links here paying close attention to detail.

Can you post a picture of it? From your description, it could be just about anything. I think the Garden Marks were sold by Montgomery Wards. SOME of them were made by Simplicity, but not all.
