i'm trying to get my tiller (craftsman) started but having trouble with it. it is a small briggs & stratton engine 5.5hp and it's only about a year old (but out of warranty). i checked the air filter (clean), replaced the spark plug and drained and filled the gas tank twice with new gas. i checked the fuel line from the tank to the carb and it runs clear (how i drained it.) i took the carb apart last night and did not see any gunk on it anywhere but ran some air and carb cleaner over it anyway. it is a float type carburetor. if i spray starter fluid down the spark plug hole or into the carb the thing will start up and run for about a second or two then quits i guess because it is only burning that stuff. otherwise it will not start at all, choke, half choke etc. it is almost like it is not getting gas but the float bowl in the carb was full both times after i drained the tank so i know it is at least getting there. any other ideas?

thanks,
duke

Sounds like you need to rebuild the carb. Everytime that sort of thing happens to me, a carb rebuild solves it. The kits are pretty cheap and easy to install. You've obviously got a blockage somewhere in one of the small fuel passages and you need to disassemble the carb, clean it thoroughly and then install the new kit. You'll be surprised at the results...

try cleaning out the hole in the bowl nut with a wire tag or tip cleaner..lucas
