Have any of you used a car oil filter in place of the one called for on the Briggs and Stratton 18 hp. motors. The price they ask for the orginal filter is very over priced. I have heard some people using the car filters in place of the one called for in the manual. Has anyone had any problems using the car filter on the B&S 18-22 hp motor?

I have a Briggs Vangard 18hp V-Twin on a Deere 140. Have cross referenced the remote mounted filter, and it is the same one that Chrysler uses on their 4 cylinder 2.2L non-turbocharged automobile engines. Have been using the automotive filters without trouble, from the get-go.

Denny, Pay the price for the BS filter. ALWAYS use OEM filters on any brand of small engine. Aftermarkets and "will fits" don't always have the proper relief spring in the, and this can restrict oil flow. Trust me on this one, I have a pile of engines here that are junk because of this very thing. I won't even use aftermarkets here at the shop, even though I can make more profit off them. All warranties are void if a non-brand filter is used as well. Like Mac said, how many times do you buy one anyway? Pay me now, or pay me later. Thanks,
Rick www.goodmanequip.com

No problem. You can take the B&S part #(s) and cross reference them to a filter brand of your choice. In fact, you can even get the exact same filter from the same OEM. There are only a handfull of filter companies out there making these and Briggs' OEM is 'CHampion Laboratories' which also makes, among other brands, STP and some ACDelco last I checked. FYI Depending on clearance - Briggs uses the same filter as many Toyota 4 cylinders and I'm sure there are other cars the filter is used on as well. So if you happen to own a Toyota - maybe get 2 birds w/ one stone...

I've not used them on B&S but I've used a STP (cross referenced )on Kohlers with no problems.

Denny: I got a kohler engine and the filters are about 8 bucks. Expensive, yep a little. I watch Sears sales and buy 2 or 3. I could cross to another type but first you dont save that much on a Cr. Ref.quality filter, second, original equip is the way to go. Look at it this way. How many times do you change the filter a year. Is it worth the hassle of going to another brand. Good oil and a good filter is the cheapest thing you can put on an engine.

I have used Hastings filters on the Briggs... There is a cross-reference to the Hastings #, but I don't have it handy. The problem is this filter costs about the same as the Briggs. I would not use a filter unless the mfr's catalog shows it as a replacement for the OEM filter.
