Have a 13hp Briggs with breaker point ignition that has a bad (open circuit) ignition armature (coil). Engine model is 304437. 30 CID, external breaker points, ball bearing main, electric start, dual circuit alternator.
I'd like to know if I can convert the ignition over to solid state to eliminate the breaker points. One local shop says yes, one says no.

Hi Jim,

YES YOU CAN. I have done it on lots of B&S engines. Check out Northern Tool, They sell this little conversion module that will eliminate the points. I have a done it on old 12 HP models and the conversion works just great. The only drawback that I have noticed is that you have to spin the engine a little faster than normal when starting. With points, you will get a spark at any RPM but with the conversion, you have to spin the engine at about 200 RPM before she will kick. If it is electric start, no problem but if it is pull, you might be better off with the points.

Hope this helps,

Joe
