My neighbor has a MTD manufactured lawn tractor with a B&S Model 42A707 Twin I/C 19HP engine. The tractor is 5 years old. This vertical shaft engine has developed a severe oil leak between the cylinder assembly and the engine sump (base) and I'm trying to fix it for him. My plan is to seperate the sump from the assembly and replace the gasket. I feel that it is unusual for a engine to develop a severe leak at this location and have a few questions that maybe the site experts might be able to provide advice. Here they are: 1) Does this engine have any known oil leak probems? 2) Is there anything else that I should be looking at while I'm working on this engine problem? 3) Could it be possible that a problem with the breather may be causing the crankcase pressure to build and force the oil to leak? Thanks in advance.

I have a MTD but with a 14 horsepower I\C engine.
It has also developed a small oil leak at the base. My neighbors has done the same.

just replace all the gaskets on the engine and you will be fine
