HOT EXHAUST!!!

I have a Craftsman 12 HP OHV tractor that is Burning stips in my lawn. As soon as I start it the exhaust that is expelled straight down from the muffler is about 1000 degrees. Do I need a new muffler? Or should I install a plate to deflect the exhaust forward, or to the sides?

Thanks,
Todd

Never saw a muffler that pointed straight down. Should point out the side (or up with a flap).

If you do change the direction of the exhaust be sure not to restrict it. Also, check to be sure you are not running to lean....Good luck Art

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I am not savvy enough to know if I am running lean.

I bought the tractor at a garage sale for $25.00, 3 days later I blew out the transaxle. I found another tractor, a couple of years newer in a mower repair boneyard. I bought that one for $50.00, and swapped the transaxle.

5 days later the Briggs and Stratton that was on it siezed up. So I took the Tecumseh out of the parts mower and put it into the other.

It does burn oil, and smokes more or less all the time, but for $75.00 it does haul a lot of mulch ant topsoil. Just had 10 yds of topsoil delivered this morning. I don't cut with the mower, I just pull my cart, and I just purchased an aerator spreader to pull behind it.

If you have any other suggestions, I'm all ears.

Thanks again,
Todd

Hi Todd, if you pull the plug and it appears a very dry light grey you are probably running lean. The richness screw on the carb. should be adjusted out a little to run richer.

First suggestion would be to see about getting the Briggs fixed! Sounds like it has been a learning experience thats for sure! Most of those too good to be true deals like that usually are.

The Briggs certainly ran better than the Tecumseh. I see the arguments here B & S vs. every other engine type. Maybe over the winter I can get that rebuilt, and dump the Tecumseh next spring.

Thanks, looks like $409 for new. Now the question is do I put that $400 towards a real tractor?????

Thanks again

Dedpends on how much you allready have in the mower if a new motor is justified. Another factor would be if you liked the mower and if it had all the features you liked on it. Does it mow good? Thats how I would go about it and it may pay to check on the price of a short block as well.

You might even try NorthernTool.com and see what a complete new engine would run. Might be less than you would pay for the rebuild or you could at the least get a short block and save some. Just a couple more thoughts
