My 12 HP Murray 38" mower does not self-charge. I have to use a battery charger prior to starting the engine. I meassured a short at the wires coming off the magneto, does this mean that the coil is bad? Also, there are two wires coming off the coils, one attaches to the solenoid and the other does not attach to anything. It does look like it was cut from something but I can't find the other end. Could someone tell me where this second wire go to? Thanks.

what does the wire that you are grounding do when you shut the motor off. if it dosent spark with the key on and the motor off, that is probably the wire that charges the battery. you will probably need a voltage regulator on it so you dont overcharge it.

Mowman-My statement about the two wires is incorrect. One wire is attached to lights and the other one appears to be cut/broken off. Should it be attached to the solenoid or something? Touching this wire to ground when running causes and arc. If so, should it be attached opposite to the battery contact? I may have to go to library...thanks.

THAT WIRE SHOULD BE HOOKED EITHER TO POSITIVE POST ON BATTERY OR TO THE SOLENOID WHERE THE WIRE FROM THE BATTERY HOOKS TO IT

When you are charging what kind of charger do you have Does it have a amp meter on it ? If so does it decrease in amps as it charges or just stay high or not come up at all. If one of the last 2 your battery is probaly shot.Did the battery get drain at anytime also

I swapped batteries with my other mower and have the same problem. Both batteries work good with the second mower.

Paul-My statement about the two wires at the magneto is incorrect. One wire attaches to the lights and the other one is not attached to anything. Should this cut/broken wire be hooked up to the solenoid/relay or something? Touching this wire to ground causes an arc. Wish you luck with your problem.
