Barks at me

I got Dad's 12.5 hp B&S lawn tractor engine back together after replacing a broken connecting rod. There are two ways to mate up the crankshaft timing gear with the camshaft gear - the right way and the way I did it the first time! So I rotated the camshaft 180 degrees and put it back together again. The first time I assembled it, all it did was spew raw vapor out the muffler. Now all it does is bark at me through my new air filter. Can somebody tell me I'm making progress, and that the problem is a bad intake valve? At least that way I don't have to take the engine out of the tractor and split the crankcase again. I can lap the valves, but how do you adjust the valve clearance - grind off the valve stem? And what should the cold clearance be? I've sent away for B&S manuals, but I hope with help on this board, I'll be done by the time they get here and I can use them for the next small engine repair job.
