Briggs 18HP twin has a rattle sometimes after warming up. Sometimes goes away, sometimes stays for the entire session. Not obnoxiously loud but just enough to make me wonder. Previous owner says it's been doing it off and on for about 3 years. Valve adj maybe?

Mine does the same thing, but only noticable at low RPM (idle speed) Almost sounds like its running on only one cylinder, but I know both are firing. No problems after 7 years like this.

Does it rattel under a heavy load or under no load? It is not the valve adjustment. Unless the previous owner did a valve job and set the gap to wide, but this would be a constant noise all the time even under a load. Does it smoke or use oil? It could be what they call piston slap. That is when the cylender is worn and the piston is to loose in the cylender. It could be a rod getting some wear on it causing it to knock a little. Try using a single grade oil not a multi grade oil. Depending on your climate will determine which grade to use. Here in east Texas I use 30wt. Let me know what you find.
Good luck: Mark
