Had this engine givin to me . It was on a grasshopper mower . The man had it rebuilt but when it gets up to operating temp. it looses power and smokes really bad . He got tired of puttin money in it and bought a new one . I`m thinkin the sleves was`nt replaced , the fellow that rebuilt it was complaning about losing money on the job so I figger he was cutting corners . The rebuild price was $500 . I may be way off base . What do you guys think . Is there anything I should checkout before tearing it apart .

What color is the smoke?? Blue or black. If the smoke has a blueish color that is oil burning. Probable cause is the valve clearance is set too tight. If the smoke is black that means the engine is loading up on feul. (check the spark plug for carbon deposits) When an engine is cold it reqires more feul, once it warms up it needs less. Possible problems is that the choke is not set properly and is still partially engaged or the secondary mixture screw is turned out too far. I have also seen a number of carburator needle & seat problems with the newer 14 -16hp briggs motors. Hope this helps
