Kohler CV14S has intermittent spark

My Craftsman Lawnmower with a Kohler engine (model #CV14S) has an intermittent spark. It will start, then run for approximately 5 minutes and then quit. When I attempt to restart the spark is gone. If I let the mower sit for a day, it can then be started. This is a very consistent pattern.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Thanks guys - that was it - replaced the coil (magneto/ignition unit) and all is fine. I appreciate the help.

Jim: Thanks for the response. Yes - it is an electronic ignition.

Bob, my danged book is at home and I'm at "work"!!! So I don't know if it's electronic ignition or not.

Anyhow, here's stuff to check:

1. Bad plug wire.
2. Loose/grounding connections in kill switch circuit.
3. Bad condenser (point ignition).
4. Bad magneto.
5. Bad electronic module/magneto.

Hope this gets ya on the right track. I'm just gonna have to break down and buy TWO SETS of books!

You forgot to list one thing on your list of things to check.

A shorted winding in the stator can also cause the tecumseh ignition modules not to spark.

Or even a bad brush plate on an electric starter can rob all the voltage from the ignition system and cause this same problem.

I suspect the stator is bad and not supplying full voltage to the ignition module.

Is a CV14S a pull-starting engine? Also, is an ignition module related to the coil? What is the model number to the coil for a pull-starting engine?
