I have a B&S 16.5 horse power engine. I ran it for about 2 hours without any problems. Turned the engine off and started blowing a lot of white smoke from the exhaust pipe. What can be the matter. The oil level is still at the correct level and checked out correctly at the start of running the engine and after the white smoke came pouring out.
Thanks Dr. Michael

i once rebuilt a briggs to solve a simalar problem but new rings did not help. i finally found that the plastic on the oil dip stick was broken and allowing too much air into the vent system and taking a lot of oil with it, worth a look.

IF RELAITIVLY NEWER ENGINE PROBABLY WAS OVER FILLED ONCE OR TWICE CHK FOR OIL BELOW THE CYLINDER.IF OVER HEAD VALVE ENGINE PROBABLY BLEW HEAD GASKET OR PCV VALVE SEE IF THERE IS ANY OIL IN AIR CLEANER BASE ONCE FILTER IS REMOVED I BUILD THEM EVERY DAY!

WHITE SMOKE IS OIL BURNING.
DID YOU JUST CHANGE OIL?
CHECK THE AIR FILTER, IF PLUGGED IT WILL PULL OIL OUT OF THE ENGINE THROUGH THE CRANKCASE BREATHER.
ALSO MAKE SURE THE UNIT IS NOT OVER FILLED, IF IT IS IT WILL BLOW OIL PAST THE RINGS UNTILL THE OIL LEVEL IS BACK TO THE RIGHT LEVEL.

Ever run into a bad breather assembly? I've checked my oil level several times, taken the air filter right off, and still oil is sucked out the breather hole?

You mention this happening one time. Does the engine now smoke white when you run it or does it repeat the original problem? Tom is right that white smoke is oil. Check you spark plugs for signs of oil fouling.

Usually white smoke is fuel.

Fuel smoke is BLACK! Water vapor, Steam, can look white. White or grayish smoke is most likely oil.
