I have a lawn tractor called a gilson gear 16 I can find no other model number on it. Would like to know the age or there abouts and if 16 means horse power I cant find a tag on the engine so don't know that either . It does run but the coil on fly wheel went out and I am running on a car coil 12 volt If any one has ever heard of this make let me know thanks

I don't know about the "Gear" part of the Gilson you are talking about, but my mother still uses a Gilson G-16. Since I repair small engines on the side, I know a bit about it. If it is the same tractor, the 16 is the horsepower. Hers has a Briggs and Stratton single cylinder 16 HP. We also use the car coil, it runs great!

Gilson Bros company was in Port Washington Wi until the mid 1980's, when OMC/Lawnboy bought 'em out. Lawnboy is now part of Toro.

Many of the Gilson tractors had Briggs engines, most of which had model, serial, and type numbers stamped into the fan shroud. Take a closer look, it may still be there under years of dirt.

Although it really doesn't matter,Gilson actually was located in Plymouth,Wi. Port Washington was home to Bolens(until Troy-Bilt moved 'em) as well as Simplicity. The other orange ones,Ariens is in Brillion,WI and Jacobsen was from Racine,WI

There's a yahoo club dedicated to the gilson garden tractor. It's kinda slow over there though, so be patient. You may not get a response for days.... G

I know it's kinda slow on the Gilson board, but there aren't many questions about Gilsons so I don't check as often-but I WILL get back with you.
