Greetings all, this is my first time posting in the garden tractor forum. I am working on a neighbors John Deere 140 hydrostatic garden tractor. The problem is after warming up the tractor, the hydrostatic pump gets very weak. The tractor will barely pull itself up a small grade, and the hydraulic cylinder on the 3 point will barely work eiether. I am suspecting the pump is shot, but was wondering if there a reasonable (costwise) fix for this hydrostatic type of system. Was also wondering if anyone has has had any experience repairing this, and would know weather or not parts are available through a dealer or aftermarket. As always, any help or comments on this would be greatly appreciated. By the way, the hydraulic filter was just replaced, and the system was filled with the recomended type and amount of fluid called for in the operators manual. Thanks..... Tom

By now, I hope you have already checked the bypass valve on the top of the transmission. It is used to put the transmission in "neutral" for moving the tractor manually. The knob (actually a threaded bolt) is on the deck just in front of the seat. This thing has a habit of working loose, and pressing down on the valves sticking out of the top of the transmission. Partially depressing the valves can cause problems like you describe. Valves may stick too, so just loosening the knob may not work. May have to take valves apart and clean, or try to pull them up with pliers - CAREFUL not to scar the stems.

Does anybody know what the part looks like that attaches a mid-mount grader blade to the rear axle?
I need the part but may be able to fabricate one if I know what it looks like?

had a 140 at one time...was told that this is common for early 140's....problem was it was blowing o-rings....pictures in the service manual...it was the screw out valve on top and bottom and they can be changed in tractor...only use jd o-rings
