I recently inherited a JD 318 with an Onan 18 hp engine. It will start with full choke but surges when the choke is off. I drained the gas and put in new. I disasembled, cleaned and reasembled the fuel pump. Removed the top half of the carb and cleaned what I could. Spark plugs are fine. Also, neutral position is slightly in reverse. The lever must be slightly forward of neutral to stop the pump but then the neutral safety switch isn't in contact with the lever. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Take the carb back apart & find the main jet at the bottom of it, on a 318 it is in the front left corner straight in from the drain plug. take a small piece of wire or something like it & clean out the hole in it. I sometimes use the carb cleaner in a spray can & the little hose that comes with it & spray the cleaner thru the hole be carful because the spray will come out the top of the carb & If you are like me it will go in your eyes. Sometimes I have to do this again after the tractor has run for a few hours. Dan

Do you have to take the carb out of the tractor or can you take it apart in place?

Thanks Dan, I borrowed a gas welder tip cleaning set from my neighbor and gently cleaned out the jet. Then I squirted carb cleaner through the hole an up into my face. I had to laugh because you told me so. Now it runs great. I've still got to figure out how to adjust my neutral position. Again, thanks for taking the time to reply. DY
