Hello,

I just purchased a Gravely Model L at auction ($170) and it came with a new 12 volt battery. I was told that this was a 12 volt system but the manual says 6 volt and I think maybe the auction folks have this wrong. It fires right up with the 12 volt but I'm afraid I'll burn up the starter or cause other damage until I find out for sure. It doesn't look as if the electronics have been modified from the factory installation. Is there some way I can tell for sure if it is 6 or 12 volt? Thanks in advance.

Dear Agky, I have a 1959 Model L Gravely Walk-behind Tractor that my family bought brand new in '59. It is on a 6 volt starting system. Since 6 volt batteries seem to be harder and harder to find, I have a 12 volt marine battery hooked up to it. The electric starter is a 6 volt starter that was purchased as a kit in 1960. I have used a 12 volt battery on the tractor since about 1980. Never had a single problem with the starter. It never overheated, or blew the windings. Those starters are almost bullet proof in my experience. In reference to whether or not your tractor is a 12 volt, here is my knowledge on the whole 6-12 volt debate. On the right side of the tractor there should be a tarnished looking "box" with a shaft going into it. If so, you ahve the original ignition for the year tractor you have described. That is the Magneto(sorry if I am telling you information that you already know(: )

By using a 12 volt battery on a 6-volt system you will find that the engine cranks over quicker. I have actually found that my Model L starts BETTER on a 12 volt battery!

Thank you for listening to me babble, I hope that I have been helpful. Congratulations on your great purchase, My Gravely has been in the family for 3 generations. Since my great uncle bought it in 1959, it has never been touched mechanically and still runs flawlessly! They are an amazing tool and are a joy to operate!

Have Fun!

Sincerely,

M. Scheiper

Do you have to take the carb out of the tractor or can you take it apart in place?

My L was 12 volt. The starter should have an ID plate stating the voltage.

My old Model L came with a 6-volt battery, but I had it in the Gravely dealer's for other service and they told me it didn't matter if I put a 12-volt battery in it. The starter can handle it with no problem and it spins faster.

The electric starter option with the Model Ls were powered with 12 Volt batteries.
