Hi, I need some help please. I starting my riding mower today. After aprox. 15minutes. It began to act like it was missing. Then Black smoke came out ot the exhaust pipe. Finally it just stopped running. I have tried to start it again, and ALL it will Do is Backfire and blow black smoke.
There is however a very nice looking FLAME coming from the exhaust pipe though. (haha)..
I just recently had to replace the crankcase gasket. ANY HELP would be APPRECIATED.

are you sure the choke is open, and the points are in good shape.

Mine MF 16 backfired VIOLENTLY all of the sudden last fall. I left it alone all winter and this spring it turned out to be the points AND condensor. The condensor was most to blame. Check you coil and condesor connections while your there.

Points& Cond,, Most likley if this engine is with in the last 7 years it will not have points, not saying it wont just their very un common in the last 7 years and newer engines, Backfiring hmmm Yes check to make sure the choke is fulley open, next try to detirmin if the float is stuck in carb, sounds like the way it died , the float stuck open and or sunk due to a pin hole, LOL Yes they due produce a nice flame whene they backfire from over rich mixture
