Gravely Model L Governor problem

The governor on my Gravely (Super convertible circa mid 60s) seems to have quit on me. As soon as the engine starts, it really revs right up and the only way to slow it down is to manually push on the rod connected to the governor. This appened kind of suddenly a few days ago. Is it tough to rebuild the governor? (assuming I can find the parts)?

Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

do you have oil in it?use 30 weight. the parts are available at richards lawn and garden 304-927-4550 including complete assembles. theres really nothing in there just a couple of fly weights and a sleeve. somthing could have gotten scored if it was run low on oil. ive rebuilt them easy enough except i had to use a press to get the pulley off.dont try a hammer youll damage somthing (i know about this).im sure you could try the gravley tractors of yesterday web page and find a used one. i may even have one. good luck.

BTDT Had the same thing happen to mine and it was so bad inside that I wasn't sure what was ruined and what wasn't so got a complete gov. from the company. Seems like it was around 75.00 not a lot different than the parts were separate and I knew everything would be there and in the proper place. The mfg id number is 202957 00 You will have to have a repair shop order the parts for you the company will not ship to an individual or they didn't a couple of years ago. AD

The governor on your L was an option and if you just reconnect the linkage it can be easily bypassed. If you do alot of work such as plowing, you will need to get it repaired. -Nick

My model L-I governor was all gummed up and not working. I took it aparty and cleaned it out. Problem is that one of the small disks looks something like a miniature clutch disc--concave on one side. I forgot which way it came out. Anyone able to help me? Describe it pointing in terms of towards the tractor or towards the operatio. thanks.
