Anyone have any knowledge of the 3 wheeled ztr rider by Swisher? They have been made for years as a Big Mow, now Ride King. The company is still producing these machines, do they sell enough to suggest that will continue?

Do they work well, they appear robust and innovative.
Any comments appreciated.

Re: Swisher 3 wheel Ride King in reply to Bruce, 02-07-2000 15:10:57
I love this little mower. My parents bought it around 1968, and I am still mowing with it today. In fact, I have made them leave it to me in the will, and no one is allowed to touch it but me. Daddy passed away last September and now it falls to me for its upkeep. Other mowers live there now, but I don't use them nor want to. HOwever I am having a problem I don't know what to check for and don't feel comfortable with just anyone working on it. Maybe someone could have a suggestion. I would really appreciate any help you can give. The mower starts up and runs fine. I could drive all over the yard until, however, I engage the blade. When I do that, the mower dies. I believe I remember Daddy saying right before he got sick that he had taken it in for a tuneup and it was good to go. I didn't have the opportunity to find out what they did or try it out before he became so sick and then passed away. What is causing it to die? I can crank it right up again, ride around until I engage the blade and then - stop. Please help. Thanks so much. I miss my troubleshooter.

I have a 1960 something ride king and i use it every week I love it but I would like a newer one preferably a 1998 or newer with the new body style if any one has any idea where to find a newer used one please let me know. I have ridden many different kinds of lawn mowers and this is my favorite by far.

I managed to get one for nothing and spent $50 on the front end and some paint and use it regularly. I did find out mine is a 1974 model.

I can tell you for certain that the older swishers (1965-1989) are worth some hot dollars for antique parts or restoration by a collector what you have is a three wheeled goldmine!:)

I have a 1964ish Swisher"Big Mow" and I gotta say its the neatest/funnest most low tech, easy to maintain piece of lawn equiptment I ever owned.Of course mine is pre safety Nazi, with no safety switches, electronics, blade brakes etc.Swisher has always been right there when I needed a part or such and still has most parts for old machines in stock.Mine is 6hp tecumseh, pull start and I probably mow more with it than the other 5-6 newer"improved"tractors I own.just because its so basic, manuverable and FUN.Do a Web search forBig Mow and you will find at least one other Big Mow lover besides myself.(has pics/history etc)

Also go to Swisherrr Web Page and check history. These puppies have been around for better than 30 years.and w/o major change.Kinda like the old VW beetle,Keeping it simple was the way to go."If you can't improve on it leave it alone" seems to apply here.

I have a 1965 Swisher Big Mow. I also testify that they are absolutly the best smallish lawn mower ever made. They also look the coolest! Mine has never been rebuilt or anything major and it still usually starts on the first pull!

I am a fan for life!

Re: Help! 16 HP Kohler with a oil leak at the governor bushing in reply to John, 05-19-2002 20:28:11
The reed valve in the crankcase breather causes the crankcase to operate at a vacuum, therfore, oil should not leak out by the gov. shaft. If the cylinder, or piston, or rings are bad so there is excessive blow-by, or the breather needs cleaning, or is improperly assembled, there will, instead be pressure in the crankcase, and you will have an oil leak past the gov. shaft.
