The Dexta's have a serial number stamped on the flange between the engine and the clutch bellhousing on the left hand side. It runs vertically. You will probably have to scrape through all sorts of paint and muck to find it. Once found, go to the serial number info on this site or Oscars fordson pages Link to identify the age. The hydraulic system is different to the MF system. Your problem could be a lack of oil in the rear end, a blocked filter ( there are two ), a pump failure, a lift piston failure, or if the tractor has sat idle for a long period of time, it could be that the "gunk" in the oil has settled and the control valve has seized in position. I had a similar problem with My old Dexta when I first got her. Taking the lift cover off & cleaning out the "gunk" on the bottom of the transmission case & cleaning the strainer filter ( this require removing the hydraulic pump through the right hand side if the case) & replacing the return filter were the first steps. With the lift cover off & turned upside down I found that the control valve did not move freely. I removed it & cleaned the "gunk" out & reinstalled it. Problem solved. You will probably find that the oil in the system has deteriorated over the years with normal use & the ingress of water. The system can be flushed with kerosene ( to the point of actually draining existing oil & replacing it with kerosene and then running the tractor for a short time before draining the kero & refilling with the proper grade oil....30wt diesel engine oil works fine.. depending on the climate your working the tractor in. )There are two drain holes underneath, both are obvious when you get under her for a look. When draining, jack the front of the tractor up to get the most oil out of the rear end. Put your finger inside the drain hole to see if you can feel any metal particals & to scrape any sludge out. The best advice I can give you is to get an I&T manual once you have identified if she is a Dexta. The manual is a great help as the diagrams make it easy to understand what you are looking at. Good luck. Regards, Paul

Mike, go to the Ferguson boards and review the post by John from UK. I am sure those lifts are simular. All the Dextras, I believe were mfg. in Great Britton, and have Perkins diesels like the MF.

The engines in both Dextas and MF are 3 cyl Perkins with some differences ( injectors, pumps, govenors)however the Hydraulics are different systems in design. The MF 135 has a 3 cyl perkins engine just like the Dexta ( I have both ) but the MF135 has a draft lever next to the lift control lever. The Dexta doesnt have the Draft lever next to the lift lever, it has a lever with two settings mounted on the side of the gearbox ( right hand side)just under your right thigh when your seated on the tractor. The Dexta lift cover can be unbolted and lifted off. The MF135 requires a disconnection of a linkage inside the coverplate that sits half way down the right hand side of the gearbox housing. This coverplate usually has a hydraulic speed control setting on the outside of it. If you try to remove the lift cover off the MF without making the disconnection as i mentioned it, you will damage the internals and break the housing coverplate. Ask Big Dean on the Massey page, he'll confirm it ( with probably a better description too )
