Ok all,
I dont know squat so that's why I'm here. I have the Ford I & T Manual and the Operator's Manuals and they both tell me to use 30 SAE HD when above 20 deg F. and 20 SAE HD when below 20 deg F. in the Gearbox and the Rear Transmission (this I assume is for the Hyd Lift?).

For the Engine, I am told to 30 SAE HD above 90 deg F.; 20 SAE HD from 20 to 90 deg F.; and 10 SAE HD for below 20 deg F. Since I live in North Texas, 20 to 30 is my target according to these books, but seeing your posts I'm not so sure. My wife and I are about to begin tackling our 1960 Dexta this winter, and I want to be sure I'm using the right stuff.

My first concern is the Engine, as I need to change the oil and filter this weekend so that I can get some work done prior to winter and the teardown/re-build. What oil should I use in the Engine? Do any of you have alternate filter #'s than the Ford # I have (6731)?

I would also be interested in this Oscar reference manual and any others that you have found helpful. Thanks for indulging my simple questions, and I look forward to your responses.

The original Dexta manual specifies the same oils. Stick to the manual, you cant go wrong.
Peter.

Thanks for the response Peter. I am just a little uncertain, as I have seen many different posts regarding the different oils being used. Do you know anything about the other manuals that list the alternate oil recommendations? Do you know of any of the alternate oil and fuel filter numbers? Thanks.

I use Mobil Delvac 1300 @ 15-40 engine oil with good results in every vehicle here. It does alot better than Shell Rotella or Chevron Delo in our climate.

Walmart and AutoZone both usually have it in stock. I run straight 90W gear oil in both gear boxes year round and it does good. I'm 50 miles east of the Dome.

FUEL filter#
Carquest # 86194
NAPA #3194

OIL filter#
Carquest# 85188
Wix# 51188

The Fram #'s are CH813PL
C11816BTL

I don't remember which Fram number is which filter but one of the Fram # is fuel and the other is oil.

Thanks for the information Burrhead. These numbers will come in handy. I will change the oil out this weekend to do some mowing, and then prepare for the teardown this winter.

I talked with the guys at New Holland, and they have the filter in stock for $6.95 and it comes with the filter gasket. However, my Ford part manual shows to smaller gaskets that go above and below the filter (they are #'d 18689); the guy told me they dont carry these. I am worried that once I remove the old filter other things (like these gaskets) may need replaced; should I be worried? Where can I get parts like these? Will i just have to try and match them up against some other gasket?

Thanks for your help.

The small gaskets the books are showing are actually a pair of neoprene(sp?) washers sometimes but usually they are rubber washers that should be built into the filter.

The bottom one seals the filter to the stem and the top one seals it to the housing.

The oil and fuel filters both should have the rubber attached to the filters from the factory.

Thanks Burrhead for the information. I changed the oil and filter this weekend, cleaned out the sump strain screen, and tightened a few bolts; the old girl was purring. But it looks like I will have plenty of gaskets to change this winter for small leaks throughout the tractor :-).

After changing the oil and preparing my "wife" for mowing our pasture, she heard a loud POP and exhaust was spewing out on every stroke of the pistons. I have determined that one of the brass seals under the exhaust manifold compression chamber caps broke. These seals appear to be stamped brass, and I found them in my parts manual, but I worry that they may not be available at the New Holland dealer. If they aren't available, do you have any recommendations for locating these simple, but needed, parts? There should be a shop here in the Dallas / Fort Worth area; but your inputs would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

If you can find a Perkins Diesel shop listed in the phone book they are 1/2 price or so of what Ford gets on parts.

Any pretty good machine shop around here usually has them in stock.

Thanks again Burrhead. I'll let you know how it works out. I hope to be back in business by the weekend; still got weeds to mow (a few acres worth - or the wife does that is):-).

I think I'll post a new subject when I write next. This RE: is getting pretty long.
