Engine Oil in Early Fordsons?

Just wanted to know what viscosity engine oils other people use in their old Fordsons (Fs Ns and early majors). It seems like all the oils these days are multi vicosity which seem to be too thin when cold making them knock a little til they warm up. When you buy the monograde 30 or 40 it starts getting expensive when it takes close to two gallons to fill!

Anyway thought I'd stir things up on the early stuff again!
Regards
Andrew

Boy, not much got stirred up but I will answer your question. My '23 model F has straight 40wt. in it. Living in East Texas, I've never had an occasion to start it when the temperature is below 45F. I buy oil at StuffMart and don't change it perhaps as often as I should. Shucks, a good layer of sludge can prevent condensation...

One other point - my copy of the manual says to run 60wt. and that you may have to build a small fire under the oil pan to thin the oil sufficiently during cold weather.
