i have a 1919 Fordson "F" tractor and the clutch will not disengage at all unless i wrap the pulley with a flat belt and pull on it! Now my ? is can i get to the clutch from the top without splitting the tractor??? and if so, what do i do to save time and do it efficiently, without alot of money????? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot,
David Sall

Hello,
I don't think you have much choice other than to split the tractor and clean the clutch plates. Each alternate plate is meant to be dished so that they release and slip when the clutch is used. Others will tell you that you can hammer them carefully to restore this dish shape as over the years they flatten out from sitting around under tension all the time. I'm not sure whether your machine has a transmission brake (I can't remember when they started using a brake) but if it doesn't you will need the clutch to be working well to be able to engage the gears without them crunching. I have an English N and have to wait for the oil to heat up a little for the clutch to release properly (I'll get around to fixing the clutch one day!) Sorry! I had to add my bit!
