Power Major Value

I almost fear asking this question because of the fierce loyalty of this group to these great tractors. I have a 1959 Fordson Power Major, diesel, that I've had for 10 years that I need to sell. It's been a great tractor, but it's aging, parts are getting very hard to find, and I'm not a great mechanic like some who post here. So I bought a little newer machine for the general tasks around the farm. I can't afford to keep both machines. I wish I could. Kids in college.
I'm not a collector. I'm a want to be part time farmer who can't afford the time to spend tinkering on old iron. I really enjoy using tractors for farm work, not fixing them.

My question is- what's it really worth? It has excellent rubber, nearly new, runs fine. The only problems I know about are the power steering cylinder leaks badly and no rebuild kit is available. The temp sending unit needs to be replaced. And the engine, while it runs great, is aging. The tach has never worked, so I have no idea of engine hrs. I've not put very many hrs. on in the time I've owned it. The oil pressure is 35-40 lbs. when it's cold and drops to 20-25 when hot and at working rpms.

You can tell by the length of this post that I'm attached to this piece of historic iron. As a result I know I'll want more than it's worth to a buyer. That's why I need your help in determining a value. Your comments will be appreciated even if you chide me for thinking of selling such a fine machine.

Regards,

Barry

In the Northeast US $1500 to $2000. The two I saw at auctions this year went for under $800 but they both needed work. Yours sounds like it is in much better condition. Low selling price is the main reason I keep mine. I bought it cheap, it runs cheap but I would have to sell it cheap.

I cannot place a value on your tractor as I am unsure of values in the US (I am in Australia). Ther is however a number of things that can increase the sale price dramaticly. Good rubber and good paint is probably the bigges seller. If you pressure wash the tractor and spend two good days paining it properly, in this country it can add 30% to the sale price. A tatty Power Major in good runnung order here sells from $2500 to $3000. Take that tractor, paint it properly with a coat of Ford tractor blue and shiny orange wheels and it will sell for $5000 to $5500. The paint would cost about $150 plus thinners. Thats Aussie dollars. Don would have a better idea of US prices.

Oh yes, missing bodywork is also a detractor.

Barry,

Can't help with a valuation. I'm restoring a Power Major, and it will come up very good. I may test the Australian market, when I've finished my project. But I was encouraged by Steven's response to you.
Noticed that Steven B is also from Oz, so if you read this Steven, please send me your e-mail address. Thanks. Les Taylor
