The power steering cylinder on my '59 Power Major leaks very badly. I'd like to have the cylinder rebuilt, but the local Ford dealer says that the rebuild kits are no longer made, and they were not too interested in trying to do the job. Any suggestions on what to do? The repair manual shows the cylinder to be fairly complicated. I'm not sure I'm up to tackling the job. Would a shop that repairs hydraulic equipment know what to do with vintage tractor parts? I'm sure I'm not the only Power Major owner with a leaky power steering cylinder. What have the rest of you folks done?

Barry,
We must be all extra strong over here!! Very few FMD,FPM and FSM's were fitted with power steering, even when fitted with front loaders. My own Major steers better than my old diesel Ford Sierra car! The main problem that PAS removed was "Kick back" on rough going. If you have problems, I would convert back to manual steering. (and take a Charles Atlas course):0)
regards
Brian

Barry:

You have a very common dilemma for a Fordson. I lucked out twice in my search for power steering cylinder problems. Once, I came across a pump and cylinder that had been removed when the tractor was only a couple of years old and stored in a shed for 30 years. I have used the part number for the kit in a nationwide dealer network search..... .. had one hit, a dealer indicated an old NOS seal kit was in stock.. but upon contacting the dealer... they could not locate it on the shelf. The power steering cylinder is, to me anyway.. rather complicated and I do not have the tools to properly service the unit and adjust it. The one I did try to re-condition by just using "close" o rings and seals....ended up being worse when I got it done, than when I started. If I stumbled across a half dozen of the NOS kits collecting dust in some dealership.... I would think I was in Fordson heaven!!!
