Power Major Cooling Problem

My Power Major antifreeze foams when the engine gets warmed up. I feared another blown head gasket, but thought that maybe the thermostat was not opening properly or the radiator was partially plugged or the water pump wasn't working. Here's what I've done so far.

1. Tightened the fan belt. Thought maybe it was slipping under load. No help.

2. Checked thermostat. Seems to work fine. Would have installed a new one, but the local Ford dealer didn't have one in stock. The old one had some "gunk" on it. Thought that maybe the "gunk" kept it from operating properly. Cleaning the t-stat didn't seem to help.

3. Checked that the water pump shaft is turning, but didn't pull it out of the tractor. Still suspect that cooling fluid is not circulating correctly, but can't tell for sure.

4. Removed the radiator and flushed it with water. It seems to be clear. It was rebuilt several years ago.

5. Reassembled tractor without the t-stat and the O-ring that makes the old radiator pressure cap seal properly. It runs for a bit , then antifreeze foams when it gets warned up. Suspect that low pressure might cause antifreeze to boil, not sure.

I could use some suggestions. I don't really want to hear "replace the head gasket again". Been there. But, I need to get the ole girl running well again. She's my main work horse. My real work horse, a black Percheron thinks he's in retirement, fat and lazy (my fault).

Barry I also had the same problem with my 61 major. I did all what you have tried and still the same problem untill an old fellow told me how to fix the problem. you have to check the "o" rings that are in the cylinder sleaves and see that they are not damaged. you might as well replace them all, because you will be takeing them out anyways. and also check to make sure that the sleaves are above the block by .005" if they are not then you can get shims to lift them up. its alot of work but its the only thing that worked for me. now my old girl holds her water.
good luck. if you want to take on the job, then get in touch and I will walk you through it.

I had the same problem on my FMD, and went the same route you did. I had the head magnafluxed, surfaced, new water pump, radiator cap, etc. Mine would fill #4 cylinder with water overnight. Finally I rebuilt the whole thing, and found #4 had a cracked sleeve. It was not a small crack, it was about 5 inches long. Mine started out just like yours though, with foam and finally a mass exodus of coolant after a while of running. I ran my tractor for awhile by patching it up with sodium silicate. Best thing about it was that it wouldn't clog up your radiator, just make sure it had water covering the core when you put it in. It was well worth the money to build the engine. It runs like a top.

Barry,
Try new radiator cap. If this does not work it looks like head gasket. Did you check the height the liners were above the block (.002 to .003)

Brian.

Brian,

I'll try a new radiator cap. What pressure is best?

The head gasket replacement was done a few years ago at the local Ford dealership, so I don't know about the position of the liners. I do know they tested it on the dyno for a good part of a day before they brought it back. It has run well until now.

How does the water pump work? Is it just an impeller blade on a shaft? Any chance that it has malfunctioned?

Thanks for your help.

Barry,
Water pump is an impeller and when it goes wrong it leaks everywhere.
The cap may be different on your tractor and should be marked with the pressure with a number. I think it should be either 8 or 14.

For what it's worth I have got a Ford 5000 that will foam the anti-freeze when it is getting a bit old, could try changing it
