Hi, I have just bought a super Dexta and the serial number is 09C73261'?'
The last letter or number appears double stamped and is closest to a sharp triangle shape. Does anyone know what this is most likely to be (does not look like an 'A').
Also would you agree that it is a 1963 Super Dexta?

Gerry,

Best guess is T132 equals December 13, 1962; date that the block was cast.

Thanks for the info and photo of the serial number.
Do you have a photo of the tractor?

If you have any more info or questions, drop me an e-mail if you wish.

Cheers,

Les

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for the info. Engine number fits early '63 comparing the others I have come across. I was high with my guess. Forgot that Dextas would use up some serial numbers also.

I posted a picture of our block showing the crack, serial number and possible date code.
Date code is between the serial and the 37111310 numbers.
Hope you can see it.
Haven't posted many photos before.

Thanks for the photo.

That's the same tool stamp I saw on the '63 Dexta in place of a zero.
Wonder why they were using it?

Since it has appeared on Major's also makes one wonder if the Major and Dexta's came off the same line or just passed the same point for stamping serial numbers? And was there only the one tool?

Les

Hi Les, here is the engine serial number 1615959, the number below it on the side of the engine is 37111310.

Regards,

Gerry

Hi Les,

I have just submitted a photo in Galleries parts and pieces that shows the last part of the serial number, the triangle is complete i.e all sides meet.

Hi tiresntracks,

I'm sure you're right about the triangular 0 which would make Gerry's number 09C 732610. The digits fit with a Jan '63 Dexta or Super Dexta. Interesting and confusing stuff on Jan '63 prefix's though.

Until this topic I had believed that Dexta's and Super Dexta's ran serial numbers in the same sequence and were:

Jan '63 09B 731454 to 09B 735042

Feb '63 09C 90000 to 09C 903253
I had come across another posting of a Super Dexta with 09C prefix and digits beginning 7 instead of a 9.... but had thought it must be a typo!?

More to discover!

Curious about the triangular 0's on the Major's. Is the flat side of the triangle to the right as in a 'D' or more to the bottom as in an enclosed 'A'.

The Mar '63 Petrol Dexta I saw had one more like a 'D'.

tiresntracks said: (quoted from post at 00:29:06 01/05/08) I did a little more reading about serial numbers. It looks like Les is right. Super Dextas with 09C prefixes had S/N's that started with 9.

Jan. 1963 Dextas (not Supers) had an 09C prefix and S/N's that started with 7.

Hi tiresntracks,

Thanks for the info, there are some more numbers in my last posting that may help narrow it down.

Hi Les,

Have re checked the serial number and the only numbers/letters that are in question are the last two which look double stamped as if they have been changed, the 1 before the sharp angled triangle could be an 'M'. Also the third letter 'C' may be a 0 because it is almost a closed 'C'

Here are some more numbers that may help ... side of engine in front of serial number GKN13721G. Right Side of gear box 975E 7005 T3 P21H. right side of bell housing 957E 7505G T1 N2CH.

Looks like an original un touched tractor and the tinwork is definitely Super Dexta.

I think all the Dextas with the 09 prefix had 6 digit serial numbers. Some of my Majors have triangular zeros. My guess is that 0 is the last digit of your serial number.

Hi,

Have seen and read about triangular "0's" within serial numbers on Dextas a few other times. From that, I would suggest it would be a 0.

(From what I have gathered 09C's were manufactured Feb '63 to Dec '63)

Have not heard of a "09C" with the next # a 7 though.

09C's were typically followed by a 9. (eg: 09C 913383)

And 09B's were followed by a 7. (eg: 09B 715813)

As far as I know the 09A's (Nov '61-Dec '61) were the only Dexta's with the serial number followed by a letter. (M or N).
Would you mind checking the serial number again?

And there is a motor serial number on the upper front left-hand side of the block as well as casting date codes on the most of the cast parts. Axles, gear case, clutch housing and differential etc. which will help determine date of manufacture.

Les

AdrianUK said they altered the numbering system in November 1961 to 09A which brings it in line with the Fordson 08A which was altered in the same month.
Your machine is as you say.The last letter will be the Month of manufacture. A-N for the year.
Your triangle could be an A [Jan 63]
