Fordson Major how to start

I just bought a Fordson Major with a 4 cylinder diesel. I see it has a de-compression lever on the valve cover. I'm wondering how you start it. Is it for cold weather starting? I've seen de-compression devices where you get the engine turning and then throw it back but this one does not seem like it is ment to do that. If I have the engine compression released I can't get the engine to pop or sputter but the starter does not seem to like to turn the engine over with full compression -- what to do?

I actually just got in from doing a service to my [well my 14 yr old took control of her] super major 5000, I hooked a buzz saw to the belt, starts within a turn of the starter, but it was not always like that, it had dual 12 volts in her, and i always figured they would whirl her around with no trouble, it comes out that one battery had a bad cell and was dragging the other down, they would both show good and charged on a charger until i hit the starter, I changed it out to 1 Good 12 volt in her cleaned all the connections cleaned up the grounds and now its a pleasure to start, check your battey/batteries and grounds and you should be good to go,I do admit though if I dont use it for a week or so in sub zero weather I do need the decompression valve and the extra fuel button to assist, pat

That decompressor is for turning the engine over BY HAND; useing it with the electric starter can lead to bent valves and or cracked pistons. This manouver usually does no harm but it still ain't a safe practice. Unless the temp is below freezeing you shouldn't even need the cold start button. Majors either start right up in two turns or so or need a little work.
If yours turns a mite slow go through the routine electrical checks, then have the starter checked by a pro.
Good old tractors.

Im not for sure, majorman can tell you for sure, but I think that the lever is not really designed to get you engine started, its designed to get the engine oil on the rings and such moving and get oil circulated around in order to make it easier to turn when you actually try to officially start the engine. You open it, cycle the engine over several times, then close it and push the excess fuel button and fire her up!! Atleast in freezing cold weather anyways.
If im wrong, majorman can give you the definate answer.

You are all exactly right.

That is what it says in the manual and handbook according to Fordson. It is just for turning by hand to free up the engine initially in very cold weather.
