how can i get our f fordson clutch to disengage? i split it and conical shaped the plates like a friend of mine did but it still wont release unless you jamb it in. clutching improves when it is in the dirt.by the way the conical plates are an exaggeration, we just made them where they are not quite flat. my friend got this to work good but i must have not gotten it quite right. thanks, russ h.

Russ: Since nobody else has anything to offer on the subject an' yer in here talkin' to yerself, I'll chime in... I don't know that much about the Fordson F clutch (my father or older brother always did all of that maintenance), other than the discs are not supposed to be conical, they're supposed to be flat. Also, they are supposed to alternate, i.e., driver/driven/driver, etc. Your discs may be too worn to use, your springs may not have enough tension, or you may just need to fiddle with the adjustment. Have you followed the procedure described in the owner's manual for adjusting the clutch, i.e., ratcheting that little pawl a couple of notches? Another thing to remember, that clutch is a wet-disc system and doesn't work very well until everything has come up to temperature. On cold mornings we often had to jam the shifter into gear and roll along a bit until she warmed up. Not the best for it, but we never had any catastrophic failures due to the rough treatment. Anyway, keep trying and you're bound to get it right sooner or later. Wish I had something more definitive to tell ya, but at least yer not any further behind than ya were. Keep posting and let us know how the project progresses. Geo. D.

Russ: One more thing: Now that I think about it, I seem to remember Dad having that clutch apart and roughing the surface of those plates with some garnet paper, to take the sheen off. Just remember to get the plates put back in correctly. Not sure if that will help any, but probably won't hurt anything, either.
