I have talked to a man with a fordson major diesel I may look to buy,but know nothing of these tractors. This tractor has a front pump loader with down presure,3pt and pto.Would the pto be live?It also has power steering that has problems. It steers hard and the owner says it needs a worm gear, what are the cost and access to parts like for fordson in Canada?Next the scary,it has not been ran in more than a year and would not run when the owner tried yesterday.
I have owned tractors before and don't mind projects but Don't want to be stuck with impossable to find or afford parts.
Opinions and tips on viewing apreaciated
Al

Power Steering Problems on Fordson Major Diesel in reply to Al m, 01-29-2006 09:49:56
I wonder if the power stearing problem is not in the hydrlic ram. Mine was not working and I tried to have it rebuilt but No one could find parts so I located an internaly controled ram out of an old ford cottonpicker on the internet. It had a 9 inch throw and I had to cut and weld the old rods off the old ram onto the located ram. this worked perfectly. I also was told ford pickups had an internaly controled ram on their power stering quite a few years ago. I think the secret is the 9 inch throw. Hope this helps. Buck

Parts for the steering can be had new, All box rebuild for about $250 new. But watch for main output shaft being bent. A good working used box is about $450.00US I would look at output shaft on any Major that works hard on power steering models. As there gear boxes are usualy not worn out. If it is not bent then you will need new bearings and screw and balls.
What model is it. Super MD or Power MD. Anything other than engine parts are a junk yard scronge. Lucky in CN that there are a lot of Majors in scrap yards. Injector pumps are hard to get and EXPENSIVE! You may be looking at a very expensive rebuild here, So beware of of price!!

Well at $1500 it is a must see it run.
If not running I wouldnt offer more than a $1000.
Tires are expensive so how are the tires?
A complete engine overhaul could cost $2000 or more
and look the tractor over well as you any used tractor.
Without even just running you can not tell anything about the gears and such. These can get to cost more in repairs that if you bought a good running tractor. A good Super MD with a loader should be no more than $3500. Non running tractors the ground is the price limit.
Old models that are usable running should be no more than $1500. I see them around here PNW USA
for about $1000. I bought one running in need of some work with loader for less than $1000. If a major wont start it more than likly is a compression problem. I have seen them set for 10 years and start right up if stored inside.
