Dexta Gas Engine Questions ...

My friend just picked up a 1960 (I think) Fordson Dexta, it has the headlights in the grille. It has a Standard Vanguard gas (petrol) 4-cyliner engine, same engine that is in the Ferguson TE20 tractor with the exhaust stack on the tractor's right side. I've read that there was limited production of this gas version of the Dexta since most had the Perkins diesel. The hood, steering rods, and radius rods were longer on this gas version from what I read in the reference book.

My first question relates to production numbers. How many of these gas versions were made as opposed to the more common diesel versions?

Second question relates to a tin-can shaped tank in front of the gas (petrol) tank. It seems to be tied in with both the fuel system as well as the rear hydraulic system. Can't figure out it's purpose. It doesn't appear to have any opening in it, just the fuel and hydraulic lines. One fuel line comes out near the top and seems to vent into the regular gas tank. The whole thing is a bit of a mystery. Can anyone explain what this is and how it works?

Look at www.fordson-dexta.de click on "downloads" that is uppermost on the page. There is a free manual in English for petrol dexta.

From my reading, I understand that these were mostly meant for the Scandinavian market. Some also were in demand in places that wanted reduced noise. But I'm sure it would be the cold-weather starting trouble that made diesel less desirable in Scandinavia, as well as Canada. I suppose a dealer could have ordered a batch, but certainly the Canadian market would have been well-served by the 100 series tractors. Maybe the British tractors came cheaper,(less import duty), maybe their hydraulics/pto seemed better. Maybe some duke who owned a large cattle ranch just ordered up some to be shipped over.

A lot of work has been done on etrol Dexta's to find out how many were made. Still no conclusion has been reached. Fords themselves were of little help. All I can say is that more and more are appearing from the woodwork.

The extra tank is for fuel. As there is no battery here, the space was used up by this tank. The battery sits on the left hand step. Don't know why somone has connected it to the hydraulics.

If you like to post any further questions, I am meeting with a real expert this weekend and will pass on his answers. Would be very interested in the serial number.

The serial number is 09B710872. My friend has difficulty telling if that last "0" (between the 1 and the 8) is a zero or the letter "D", it's not punched very well. I would guess that it's a zero. Anyways, if you find out anything else, let me know. I think someone told him it might be a '61 Super Dexta, does that make sense? In any case, he needs to do an engine job, someone had run it for some time low on oil and there's a few death rattles inside down low.

Mike,

Based on the serial number, your friend has a 1962. I don't think there were any gas supers so you probably have the standard dexta.

Regards

At a local sale about a year ago, a petrol Super Dexta was sold for around £600.00. I had never heard of one either but it was definitly a Super in the pictures. I did not see it myself though.

Mike, pictures would be nice if possible. It could be a rare tractor.
