Majorman Aside from the usual things that cause an engine to smoke, i.e. rings, brgs., valve guides, seals, is there something relative to the replacement of the coupling for the injector pump(which you helped with when I installed it) that would cause it to emit blue smoke in an amount greater than it seemed to prior to the drive replacement. Also, it operates at lower speeds quite well but at about 1800 or greater it seems to miss a bit. Could the governor diaphram create such a problem if it were ruptured? Sitting atop the old girl without a breeze could lead to pulmonary disorders. Any ideas Doctor Majorman?

Art,
You could have set the timing retarded. Try moving it more advanced, say 22 degrees and see what happens.

The other main cause of smoke is light work. If you have been doing a lot of light work the engine will smoke like blazes. Give it a couple of days hard work, a good thrashing, and the smoke will clear.

I have had problems with one of my Super Majors with smoking and missing. Three days on the chisel plough and pan buster has sorted her out. Mind you it was like a heavy smog for the first couple of hours.

Now that I've got it started after sitting for however long without any running time, and properly lubed (thank you), how long should I be working it before troubleshooting the smoke? We have hay fields to work the next few weeks, then there's ploughing and discing our biggest field. That's probably as hard as I'm going to work the Major. I'm figuring that after that work, if it's still smoking the same then I'll start concerning myself with possible problems. Is that fair?
Many thanks in advance

Yes, if she is still smoking after that, investigate.
