Someone else registered the name Ford before Henry thought to do it. This was probably a nuisance, like registering a domain name. They probably thought Ford would pay to get the name back. He didn't like patents and such, so he didn't fight to get it back. He just named his tractor in honor of his son, Edsel. The name was used on English Tractors and trucks until 1964. When Henry Ford went back into the US tractor business in 1939, it was okay to use the Ford name.
