Hello . Have a question in regaurds to the Fordson Model N . As we all know the uesed a combination of what is often refered to as a bent axel and a straight axel . Fro a time the bent axels continued to be used after the introduction od the straight axael . However does anybody know when the bent axael ceased to be avilable and only the straight axal was used ? Regaurds david .

The pictures in Gibbard's book show straight axles well into the 40's. And the bent axles at the same time. I would guess you could get either one right until 1945, and Ford usually would have spares in stock for many years afterwards. I don't know what makes the difference necessary. I thought maybe the combination of rubber tires and/or steel wheels would have something to do with it, but I don't see a pattern.

My understanding is that the straight axles were used on the Model F, and when the tractor was re-designed and became the Model N (complete with magneto ignition, etc.), the bent axle was introduced. There may have been a period when the N's came with a straight axle, but probably only until the supply of straight axles (for the F's) was used up.
