major gearbox

i just bought a super major but when i engage low box it keeps jumping out of gear could any one tell me whats wrong and what needed to fix it ,any help would be appreciated

I would suspect bearings on the top shaft, take the selector cover off near the clutch, put a small bar between the two shafts and see if you can lift or move the top one. You may also see the bearing at the back has all the rollers at the bottom of the case.

You have to split the tractor at the clutch housing, drain all the oil from gearbox and rear axle, remove the bottom PTO drve, then pull the gearbox from the front.

When you put it back be careful not to damage the paper gasket. I have done a lot of these gearboxes and there is nothing worse than getting it back together and finding oil running out of the split pin under the clutch.

Good luck, take your time and its not as bad as it sounds to work on these old girls.
