860 Lift Arms: Tisco or NH

Today the 49 year old right lift arm on my 55 860 split beneath the implement ball due to wear. Upon inspection I determined that the left arm is equally thin and probably will fail soon if I do not replace it also. While visiting my local NH dealer, I learned that a new arm from NH costs over $139 and a new arm from TISCO is about $55. I know that the NH arm is a forging and I THINK that the TISCO arm is heat treated steel. Anyone have any experience with the replacement TISCO arms? $278 is a lot of money for lift arms, and I would gladly use the $55 TISCO arms if they will stand up to long term use. Yes I know my arm could be welded or a replacement end could be welded on but I restored the tractor several years ago, and, though I now use it, I would like it to remain as near original as practical. Any help will be appreciated.

Buy the Tisco arms. I did that today. By the time you have a welder weld it and buy the fittings you will be out the cost of the Tisco arms. Only you will know that the Tisco arms are on it.

Thanks for your thoughts. That is pretty much what I thought too.

Dean,You can buy just the end with the ball.It will be about six inches long.Take your lift arm and the new ends to a good welder.I have made this repair many times over the years.Never had one break after the repair. If you start looking at older tractors you will be amazed how many that you'll find with this repair. The ends are not very costly either.Tractor Supply has them.Heavy duty runs about sixteen bucks. The welder will just cut the old one off then taper both sides of your arm and weld the new one on.Good as new!

Thanks for your good advise. Thought it might be better to replace the arm as balls are loose on both ends and didn't want to repair end and have other end fail next week (or next year). These days time is more important than $, within reason, of course.

Dean,Why not both ends on both sides? Do one arm at a time and you'll still be money ahead and have both arms good as new.

Sounds like a good idea. Can the replacement ball ends be used on either end of the arms? I will investigate cost of ends and welding. Thanks for your advise.

I think you could easily find a good used lift arm at a fraction of the cost from a salvage yard or ebay.

Dean,

Without even trying to be a butt-head, I could make the round trip to TSC, and for $32 +tax +gas, in 1.5 hrs I could have the replacement ends in my hands. In another 45Min I could drive my tractor to my brother's TIG welder (and incidentally, his electric hacksaw, or whatever the real name is for that). I could weld the new ends on in maybe 1 to 2 hours, and drive back home where I would guess(with my un-trained weld job) the ends would last 10 to 20years.

I could repeat this process for the next 100 years, and by then maybe I would have spent $330.

-The above story is all theory, but if only 50 percent of it is practical, why not replace just the ends and see how it goes? I think you would still be saving time by saving money, overall.
