Went up to the lake again Friday morning and spent all day tearing into the burned 3600.
Got all the sheet metal off and spent an hour with a 3000 psi pressure washer on it.
Was holding by breath as I pulled the valve cover off thinking if the gasket was toast the valve springs and other things would be too.
Gasket was pretty dried out but by no means burned. I put a new one in.
Then I replaced the fuel tank, radiator, injector pump, starter, hoses, generator and belt - all from the doner tractor.
Started the day Saturday at the dealer where I bought new oil and fuel filters, new oil fill plug, battery cables (ouch!) and a couple of other small items. It kept spitting rain as I installed everything so I waited out the drops reading the manual on how to bleed the fuel system. Got all the fluids back in and the bleeding done. Only had a car battery with me and it wouldn't turn over fast enough to start so I had my brother pull it with the PU but by golly it fired right up. Spent another hour fixing a few leaks and drips and #1 injector was leaking combustion gas so I put a new copper washer under it which fixed it.
Took it out for a spin and it ran so well I decided to hook the finish mower to it and make it do some work. Spent about an hour mowing. No smoke and almost 0 blow by. Hated to shut it down.

There was no air filter on it so I had to improvise - had some dust masks in my PU and some masking tape. Ha! Worked fine.

Got a couple of folks to thank here.
awhtx for not getting annoyed when I called him out of a buisy schedule and asked if he thought the injectors might be damaged. He said probably not. Just run them. So I did and it worked.
Rod, you made a post a couple of months ago telling a guy to bleed ALL the injectors at the same time. I wouldn't have thought of that and with a lightweight battery might have been there for a while doing them one at a time.
Someone else wrote in a post that you could change the pump without the gear falling out of time. Don't know who now but thanks.
I've never messed with a diesel before.
Might not have bought the thing if I didn't have this site and you all backing me up.
Thanks a bunch!
Jerry

That one didn't even get hot...
I once looked at an IH tandem truck that a neighbour has. There's a 350 Big Cam in it. He was working on the muffler one day and blew some sparks in the open passenger window and lit off a fuel soaked floor mat. She was gone in minutes. Cab, hood and all soft parts on the engine. I was in the yard one day and he put a battery to it, energised the fuel pump and shorted the starter... and off went the old Cummins. It's still running and I think the only thing he repaired on the engine was a new fuel solenoid a few years later. Not one gasket was touched in that engine, and believe me that truck was HOT. Takes more to hurt them than one would think.
You'll get this up and going in no time. No doubt be a good runner too.

Rod

Thanks for the pics, glad to hear you got it running! Not too surprised that it didn't take too much to get it going... it didn't look all that badly burned. Keep us posted!

Did the injectors work just fine other than the leaking copper gasket?
It looks like you've got a work horse there.

That is one ugly machine you have there, but I know a little work and that may improve. Sort of nice when you can take one that would probably be cut up for scrap iron and bring it back from dead
