I need Information on replacing the freeze plug on the back of the engine, in the block, on a 601. It appears the tractor will have to be broken at the front transmission joint to get to the freeze plug. The transmission housing covers the plug in the block, about 1 inch. Can the freeze plug be replaced without breaking the tractor at the transmission joint? If it can be done, how? If it has to be separated, can it be acomplished by just lossening the bolts and prying the joint apart a couple of inches?

You are going to have to split the tractor. If you just try to back the engine off a few inches, you risk damaging the clutch or the trans main shaft when the main shaft pulls out of the pilot bearing. Plus, I don't think you can do the job any other way. My $.02

Ralph, I just did my 4500 a few months ago. It has a loader and hoe. Talk about trouble for a 69 cents freeze plug. I had to completely separate mine and remover the flywheel and a thin plate that covers the rear of the engine.

The actual work wasn't as bad as the thought of getting started. Maybe yours is different, but I bet not. Good Luck!
