Ford 5000 grinding into gear

Recently purchased a 1975 Ford 5000 utility, diesel, 8-speed. Nice tractor, except that it sometimes "grinds" when trying to shift into a forward gear. I often have to idle the engine down and wait a few seconds in order to shift to avoid the grinding. Then again, other times it will just slip into gear with no problem. What do you think I have here, and how do I correct it? Thanks in advance. Rikiz

My 8X2 transmission on my 1997 3010 does the same thing. If the tractor is throttled up with the selector handles in neutral it grinds into gear. I have just learned to throttle down, wait a second to let things slow down, grind alittle, and live with it. Bought it new in 1997, never been in the transmission. I don"t let it bother me.

Thanks for all your info. I should have been a little more clear. The tractor is always at a dead stop when shifting. I have also tried double clutching, which doesn't help. It's funny how it sometimes drops into gear without any trouble, and other times wants to grind its way in. Guess I will work on it this summer when its warm. Thanks again. Rikiz

Without seeing it myself, what you describe sounds fairly normal. They don't call the 8x2 a 'crashbox' for nothin'... Learn to grind 'em and find 'em or else come to a dead stop, then shift.
That is a fairly high inertia transmission, so if you pull it out of gear while you're still moving, you have the main shaft and the counter shaft spinning at two different speeds, and grinding will insue when you go looking for another gear because you have to bring those shafts to all stop before the gear will engage.

Now, IF you do come to a complete stop before attempting to shift, and while stopped it still grinds on you, then I would say that there is either a clutch adjustment issue, a pilot bearing issue, a wet/gummed clutch disc or an issue with the linkage internally that prevents full disengagement of the clutch for some reason. Otherwise it sounds normal to me. I spent a lot of hours hammering gears at that transmission on a 5610. Best thing you can do is learn to double clutch for the downshift and back off on the upshift. Just clutch and shift easy. A foot throttle is essential. If you insist on holding the engine at a set speed on the hand throttle you will never in the reign of god shift that transmission on the move...

If Ford uses a bronze or brass composite bushing for a pilot bearing, it might be "grabbing" the input shaft intermittantly from lack of lubricant..This would cause it to drag and keep the input shaft turning even though the clutch pedal is depressed...

I think Timken took care of the pilot bearing for them, not that the balls couldn't be dry..

I have a 5610 and it's a "grinder". I use the double clutch method and it helps a lot when changing gears in the upper range. Otherwise you need to stop or be so darn mad you just jam it in grindings and all. This one's getting a new home this summer.

As the others said.. you need to be stopped to shift, and make sure the clutch is adjusted.

Got any oil weep from the bellhousing drain? if so.. might have a leaky rear main.. or trans input shaft seal, and thus some sticking in the clutch.

I have a 4400 with an 8 speed transmission. I have to be at a dead stop in order to change gears without grinding.

Sounds like your clutch may need adjusting. Do you have an owner's manual yet? Definatly worth the cost to have one. Also, be aware that this is not a syncronized tranny. It's not meant to be shifted while the tractor is moving. (but with practice, you can usually go 6th to 7th or 7th to 8th while rolling)
