If it's tight it should start down to probably -5 C without ether or any other type of pre-heater. The thermostart should get it going down to -15 to -20 C without a block heater. Ether below that or a good block heater...
I'd also check to make sure that the starting system and battery are up to snuff. If the tractor doesn't turn over at 200 rpm then it'll wind a long time before it starts. Those were not 'great' starting engines but they were by no means poor either.
I sometimes use a sniff of ether on our 4000 when it's below freezing but that tractor doesn't have a thermostart unit. A little touch of ether is better than running the battery down. It's also a 7000 hour engine that's seen a lot of cold starts like that so the compression is not what it once was...

Ditto what the others say.. either addicted tractors are just in the waiting line for the engine to be rebuilt.

Having to use ether to get it started regardless of temperature is a sign of a worn out (low compression) engine.

If the temperature is above freezing and you have a good battery you shouldn't need ether. Chris
