My 851 starts great, runs good for about 5 minutes then loses power tries to stall. I have to pull the choke all the way out just to keep it running. The only problem I can find is that I am not charging-my ampmeter shows zero. I have origional 6volt system. 50lbs oil psi. traded out all points plugs condenser cap rotor wires. The Battery keep charge enough to start it everytime. Can the lack of charge while running make my tractor run bad? I searched the archives with no luck.

I'd say this is a fuel issue.
Again, check the flow into the carb. It could be a blocked filter/screen. I doubt that the tank would vacuum lock in 5 minutes from a bad breather. The fact that choking it helps has me somewhat concerned though... It could be a water/dirt issue in the main jet, or a vacuum leak between the carb and head. Start with checking fuel flow.
I'd also check the spark just for the hell of it to rule that out. I had a coil go bad like that once and I never imagined that it would be the coil...

If you have enough battery power to start ( 80-150amps ).. then you have enough battery power to run ( 3-4 amps ) for an EXTENDED amount of time. I know plenty of tractors that get a recharge at night and run all day with no charg system.

Got an aftermarket fuel filter inline? will it still try to stall at high rpm after 5 minutes? 5 minutes is about the right amount of time for the gas in the carb to be used up.. so I'd check fuel.

( right at stall.. just for kicks.. check spark... but I'm guessing fuel ).

Ammeter at 0... you may be surprised to learn that means it is charging. These tractors use a net charge/discharge metering system. the genny makes up initial starter power, and then maintains ignition draw and keeps the bat charged to a pre-set votlage level. as long as the battery stays there.. the genny doesn't charge much.. just the 3-4a for the ignition.

Now.. if your meter showed a DISCHARGE.. like a 3-4 amp negative deflection.. then we could say that you were not charging.

Look at your meter the next time you start her up. take a jumper wire and jumper from the bat terminal on the vreg over to the field terminal onthe vreg.. see if your ammeter don't jump up way positive for a couple seconds... if so.. genny is charging..

5 min of run time sounds like a fuel starvation issue. Can you take off the fuel fill cap and try it? Have you removed the line from the carb and determined that you can drain out 1/2 gal of fuel into a glass jug quickly? Does the fuel look clear with no floaties? Is the fuel stop cock on the bottom of the tank open all the way?

Hopefully it's a quick and easy fix!
