Well with all the help from you guys I fixed the short in my distributer. Put it all back together gave it a shot of starting fluid, turned it over and got two foot of flame out the intake side of the carb as well as gasoline and flames which I beat out. Tried again same thing, pop, fire and flaming fule out the intake side of the carb. I don't know if I have the valves ajusted wrong or some other problem. HELP!!! Is there a step by step on how to ajust the valves in archives for my 63 172 4cyl 4000? THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR IDEAS AND HELP.

My 850 Ford ran fine..till a few days ago..It starts well, but after running for 5-10 Minutes when using disc, after letting out clutch...it stops or when just crusing down a path it stops. It will only start using the choke?/ Any suggestions? Thanks

Check for good fuel flow at the bottom of the carb and at the line going into the carb. You may have a clogged fuel line and or a stuck float

Was the valve setting done since the last time it ran without breathing fire? It may have been done wrong.
But my guess is you have the wires on wrong. Fire order 1243 with #1 at the front (radiator side). While embarassing, we've all done it!

I had the head rebuilt and the valves were also done. I did not pull the distributer, it has not been moved, and the plug wires are in the same order as always. A friend set the valves but It was done different than I remember it being done by some one else along time ago on another tractor.I will check the wires and try again.

First, put your air cleaner back on before you go any further. If you have to use starting fluid, it will work just fine if you shoot it into the air cleaner instead of the carb. You're likely to start your tractor on fire if you continue with the cleaner off.

OK, so you're getting a backfire. If you haven't messed with the valves, then there's no reason for them to be out of adjustment. So leave them alone for now.

Most likely your distributor is out of time or the plug wires are out of order. Another possibility is a stuck intake valve. If you didn't pull the distributor, then it's probably not out of time. Check to see that the plug wires are in the proper order on the distributor cap, then go from there.

Did you pull the distubutor out of the engine when you where working on it???? If you did you might have it in 180 out and that will cause that problem at times. I would try switching the plug wires stright across the cap and see if that helps
