Rebuild or replace Ford 3000 carburetor

All fords don't need aprtial choke to run.. if they did.. ford would have built them that way.

Adding choke does the following:

enriches the fuel /air mix

upps manifold vacume felt at the carb jets

needing choke to run indicates:

weak spark ( enriched mix fires on a weaker spark )

fuel obstruction ( extra manifold vacume can pull fuell thru a clogged port a little easier ..too lean of a mainjet setting can show up like this )

vacume leak ( the leak leans out the mix... adding choke enriches it.. getting it closer to normal.. )

Find the problem.. fix it. if it is the carb, and if the carb can't be fixed.. then repalce it.

As I"ve written in other posts, we made the (expensive) switch to Zenith. Easier starting, better/smoother throttle response, and the choke is used only fort starting now. What pushed me over the edge was reading this post from Zane, a much-respected Ford wrench on this and the N board.

BTW, there are two types of Zeniths, one for "65-"68 and another for post-"68.

It is not true that all/most old Fords must be run with the choke partially on in order to run properly once warmed up.

I see no reason for you to change to a Zenith carb, at least not yet. There are many things that can cause your engine to run poorly unless it is choked.

I would look for the obvious problems first, e.g., vacuum leak between the carburetor and intake manifold or between the intake manifold and cylinder head, clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, poor/weak ignition, bad spark plugs, etc.

If you eliminate these problems and it still will not run correctly you can rebuild the carb at that time. If you do so, do yourself a favor and buy your kit at CNH. Take your tractor and carburetor serial number with you when you order it and be prepared to spend around $80. Get a copy of the carburetor overhaul pages from the proper CNH service manual and follow the procedure precisely. The Holley carburetors are sensitive to float adjustments due to the vacuum operated accelerator pump.
