860 wiring help for dummies

Once again I find myself needing help with my tractor. After changing out the head gasket, intake/exhaust manifold and wiring (all of the wiring harness, points, condensor, rotor, cap, plug wires and coil) my tractor will turn over but not fire. My question is how do I trouble shoot the wiring and what is normal. With the key on and using a volt meter I have 12 volts to one side of the coil when I ground the meter to the battery ground and check the coil and nothing on the other side (going to the distributor). Do I need to be cranking the engine over to see any voltage there? I would like to check the wiring going to the distributor with the volt meter as opposed to just replacing parts one at a time. Any help would be appreciated.

If you are reading 0 on the points side of the coil your power is getting to ground. This could be a short some where or something as simple as you did not make sure the points are open before doing the test.

John, assuming the points are open, and the way this project has been going that is probably a bad assumption, I take it that I should be reading 12 volts on the distributor side of the coil also, correct? If they are open and I am still reading "0" can I assume as "Old" suggested the most likely place to look for the problem is a short in the distributor connection, i.e., the insolator shielding the "T" bolt (connecting the coil wire to the points) from the distributor housing? Thanks and by the way the wiring drawing you sent and the spec for the diode really helped that part of the project. Thanks again

You are correct in your assuptions.

Test 1... Remove the point wire from the coil and check voltage at the coil. If still 0 your coil is bad; if it goes up go to test 2.

Test 2 Put the wire back on the coil and remove it from the points. If it is 0 the T bolt is bad or the wire has a short.

If the voltage goes up in test 2 replace the points and condensor because your short is in the distribtor.

Yep.. either points are shorted.. or the feedthru wire is shorted.

Real remote possibility that the coil primary opened.. etc.

My tractor is a Ford 860 (1956) which has been converted to a 12 volt system.

Sounds like you might have a short inside the distubutor or the insalator on the side of it has gone bad. I would recheck your points etc and make sure you didn't short something out when you install them. BTDT and it can happen
