"New" 961 with a loader

I'm new to this forum having owned a Farmall 450 for the past 20 years. Last weekend I picked up a "new" '58 961 with a loader on it. The tractor starts right up and runs great. The loader also works well. I'll post some pictures of it this weekend. One thing I've learned is that this tractor has the strangest shifting transmission I've ever used. It's a 5 speed but instead of a conventional gear pattern it is set up so that with the gear shift all of the way up you shuttle between reverse and 3rd, with nuetral in the middle. When you push the gearshift half way down you can shuttle between 1st and 2nd, with nuetral in the middle and when you push it all of the way down you can shuttle between 4th and 5th. Couple with the dual disc clutch (where you you only push prtway down to shift the transmission, all the way to shift the PTO) this makes for a strange shifting transmission. Fortunately the pattern is cast in to the top of the transmission cover or I never would rember it. It does shift very well and being able to shuttle between 3rd and reverse works good when hauling dirt in the loader. Also, the gearshift is positioned so it works equally well with either the left or right hand. Are all of the 50s Fords equiped with a transmission like this? I drove a couple of NAAs a week before buying this tractor and I thought they were more of a conventional transmission but I didn't look that close. My '56 Farmall has a 5-speed with a conventional shift pattern and the live PTO is completely contralled by a seperate lever.

I ran across a 600 and a 900 a couple of weeks ago that had that pattern.

HZ:

As AW said, only the 5 speeds have the vertical gate.

It takes a bit of getting used to but once you do you will love it for loader work as 3rd and reverse are in the top gate and are perfect for loader work.

Yes, that's how all of the X6X tractors work. The X5X is the same transmission but without the live PTO. That was the only Ford transmission that shifts in that manner. The 4 speeds in the NAA and X4X tractors have a conventional shifter as do the later 8 speeds.
