I have an 860 Ford Tractor built in 1956 and it appears to be down on power. When I start it starts okay but does not like starting /taking off in 5th gear. If I let it idle for 5-10 minutes or pull a 7 ft landscape rake it will stall after about 15 minutes. I put a new carb and new plugs on it and the it run from 475 rpm to about 2400 rpm which seems normal. Any one have any ideas? Could it be timing, coil, points, condensor, rotory or does it sound more like compression issues...valves or rings? Thanks Bob

Old is right about that, my 850 did that once and slowly faded out until it would not run, right in the middle of this 1/4 acre patch I was discing. Aside from any fuel related issues, these are real easy to work on in the ignition department, don't lose that little clip under the rotor, check the gap, contacts for oxidation, clean same, check wiring connections, especially that terminal at the base of the cap. Parts are inexpensive for the ignition, but the quality of same can be poor, had a rotor break apart on my, new dust cap that would not fit, keep spares or old parts on the shelf, I had to walk back to get an old rotor, glad I shelved it, new one was junk, but changed everything when I tuned it up, saved anything that could be used, glad I did too.

Yeah, I've done that at least 2x already, one rotor broke apart when a branch or stick came up and pushed the cap up, not the parts fault that time, but there is something about some of these parts, you can tell the difference in quality, and that dust cap that did not fit, the old one works fine. I kept the brake shoes that had FoMoCo stamped on them, seemed a shame to toss em, can have em re-lined, big fan of shelving spares, especially ignition parts, was nice to have that old rotor handy that day.

Old points, condenser cap and rotor can and will cause that type of problem. As points get older the gap opens up a little more each time you run it and that in its self throws the timing off
