Good Morning,

I am looking for a new battery and wanted to see if someone could give me an estimate for a new battery. I am not sure what year the tractor is but it is a diesel.

Thanks

Just 3 weeks ago I bought a 4dlt 985 CCA from NAPA Paid $117.95 plus tax (I am not exempt). Turns my 4100 over real quick.
I would recommend you get the proper battery. Thanks, Ed

Again, the correct battery is the 4DLT, and they're 150 bucks plus around here.
You can get by for a time with a car battery if you're not in a cold climate, but if you have winters where you have extended periods of weather well below freezing, you'll test the little batteries to the limit.... and they will die an untimely death. I spose if you can get one with a good warranty, and a supplier that doesn't question you on why the batterie keeps dying an untimely death, you'll get ahead a bit, cause there's no warranty to speak of on a 4DLT. So, if you use a block heater, and the heat start, you'll probably get away with a little battery. Personally, I'll stick to my Delco 4DLT's.... It's a pay me now or pay me later type thing.

Car or Tractor Battery in reply to WSwift, 07-10-2007 08:57:55
Depends on how deep your pockets are. I put in a generic 24 car battery on old 4000D and it starts and charges just fine. $55 as I remember. I just can't pay the big $$$ for suppose to be correct battery. But that's me. I been, "just gettin' by" my whole life. bjr

The best way to make sure you get the correct battery is to take the old battery with you and replace it with the one that matches it. Plus you need to do that any how or you will have to pay a core charge for not haveing a battery to trade in

The group number for this battery should be 4dlt,call your parts stores. The N.H. number is F150 and about 150 bucks now.

Along that topic, I am running the $110 battery in my 5600 but recently needed one for the 4600 and just put a $50 car battery in and it seems to work fine. The 4600 starts basically immediately and the starter sounds just as quick as the one in the 5600. Short of cold weather cranking, are there any down sides to using the smaller battery as long as it cranks? I understand that slow or extended cranking is where the big battery holds the voltage longer and is better for the starter.

I have a 4500 that had a high amp car battery on it when I bought it. It's done okay for two years now, but I realize that there could be a problem on days when I draw the battery down by cranking multiple times that it won't recharge quickly. My tractor has a generator rather than an alternator, so it requires steady and high RPM's for a long period of time to keep the battery charged.
