I thought I had a rear seal leaking, but after takeing the pan down 3 times and replacing the seal and the beveled side seals 3 times in two weeks I still have the leak. After looking at the FO-20 manual I see a plate to cover the hydra. pump drive gear on the back of the engine. If this plate is not tight or the gasket is bad could oil run down the back of the engine and look the real seal is leaking. I can't figure out if there is oil pressure behind this plate or not. Any advice.

Tim

I bought an 860 last winter, It was really ruf. This spring when I started using it to bushhog my place it started slinging oil out every hole and seal on it,but it kept running strong and hasn't used any engine oil yet. I found an inspection plate under the transmission near the trans oil drain that was loose. I drained the transmission and got about 3 gallons of oil out. I've run it for about 3 hours and most of the leaking has slowed down,I hopes this was the problem. I would like to send my money on looks because it ugly!!!!

Could it be the rocker arm cover gasket leaking?

If your tractor is a 860, it also could be the input-shaft seal, or the pto shaft seal, that goes into the clutch pac. I just finished doing it on a 860. The needle bearing went out on the pto shaft and it took out the seal.

Tim; The hyd drive gear cover could be a source of the oil leak. It means splitting the tractor. If you have to do that I would do the rear main seal again as having the engine out allows easier access to be sure the seal is seated properly etc. If you check the archives of previous posts, there is a lot of great advice on how to install the seal.

You might also consider that before tearing it down, you let the seals have some time to absorb some oil and they might seal up. I'm assuming you're using the rope seal.
Hope this helps.
