I've noticed when I start my 850 it tends to skip... I started to pull plug wires off to see which plug was missing. When I did if I let the fire jump to the plug it would start firing.. after it ran like that a bit, I could plug the wire back on, and it would run like it should. I can keep running it like this, but would really like to find the problem.

Also I just put a new exhaust manifold on it and after it ran about 30 minutes the gasket failed.. is there some kind of material I can use that will last longer? The tractor set up for years and as I fix something... the problems move elsewhere.

Thanks guys... I was just running the tractor a bit... I noticed after about 20 minutes the exhaust manifold and the muffler were glowing like a stove eye... when it gets this hot it starts to vapor lock.. I've rerouted the gas line.. but it keeps doing it... any suggestions on why the exhaust is getting so hot? thanks again.

Most of the time if your manifold gets that hot it means its out of time and need to have the timing set correctly. Another thing that will make if run that way is the carb set to lean, either one or both could be your problem

Exhaust gasket failure is generally due to the manifold not being tightened down properly or the manifold to head surface is not square and thus unable to seat properly. Which port fails? But, with that said, I've not seen my 850 get so hot that the manifold and muffler glow. What does your temp gauage read? Is it overheating? Is the gauge bad? After letting it run up to op temp put a thermometer in the radiator and check the temp. You should have a 175 or 180 degree thermostat.

If I recall correctly an improperly timed engine can heat up too. Could the plugs be too hot for the tractor? Just a few guesses. Hope they help.

I have all new gauges and a new thermostat.. I believe 160 degrees... the gauge goes above 160 to about 180 then comes back down to 160... it does this a few times.. but never goes above I'd say 200.. when it rises it only last a second or so... I guess this is the thermostat opening and closing.

I think I'll try the timing in the morning... thanks for all the answers... since my dad died, I really have no one to go to.. this site is a god send.

A fouled plug will fire if you do that to it. Sounds like you need to #1 replace the plugs and #2 when you do go to a hotter plug then what your useing right now. If you useing champion plugs I would switch to auto lite 437s and that may help also

You can tranpose the fouled plug with one that is not for temp fix. This will probably clean the non-firing plug. That wire and or terminal in the cap could be at fault due to corrosion.Just a few suggestions. CENTAUR
